 A basic introduction for those who have never played one before.

Techniques to cover:

Holding the bodhran.

Holding the tipper (beater).

Basic rhythms in 4 time ­ reels.

Basic rhythms in 6/8 ­ jigs, and 9/8, slip jigs.

Session etiquette

Will assume familiarity with the basic chords in first (or 'open') position: eg D, G, A, C, Em, Am.

Using a plectrum.

Guitar exams. An opportunity to play your exam pieces, work on sight­reading, to think about ways to prepare for the exam, and issues surrounding what the examiner is expecting:

Scales and arpeggios: why and how.

Aural tests: why and how.

Sightreading.

  

Questions of style: getting the right stylistic approach to the historical background of the piece.

Supplementary technical preparation appropriate for the grade.

Plenty of opportunity to play exam pieces (or other repertoire) before a sympathetic audience, with feedback.

    Just before the biggest exam period, limited to 12 participants.
